Blackbeard -- Sail (SALE) Ho!
I guess the release of "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" had something to do with the timing, but the people who are releasing the "Blackbeard" DVD have been pushing it harder than I'd expected.
People who read "For What It's Worth" know that I wrote the Hallmark Channel's four-hour version of "Blackbeard." Here's the post about the production from last September in Thailand.
I wasn't entirely happy with the results but, to my surprise, the Daily Variety review was a thumbs up. Then, while writing this, the first two DVD reviews I came upon were positive.
Scott Weinberg of DVD Talk writes:
"...as far as these types of productions go, Blackbeard's pretty darn watchable. The production design is rather impressive, the thing (despite being too long) moves fairly quickly, and on the whole Blackbeard feels like a perfectly entertaining Saturday afternoon matinee..."
James Plath of DVD Town writes:
"...I expected a staid and stagey PBS treatment—something along the lines of "I, Claudius"—but what I got was a gritty pirate saga that steered way clear of the romance that characterized the old swashbuckler films. These pirates act like pirates, not dashing, misunderstood noblemen. They'll punch someone or fire shots in the air just because they feel like it, and when it comes to persuasion they'll flat-out torture a body..."
BTW, don't confuse this "Blackbeard" with a National Geographic version that came out this year as well. Two "Blackbeard" movies in the same year, why that's almost as impossible to believe as two "Poseidon Adventure" re-makes in one year. Of course, that happened to me, too, last year...
So, please, go buy a copy for yourself and then a few extra for stocking stuffers for next Christmas. I'm not sure what the WGA residual formula is for this kind of thing, but if enough of you do this, it might pay for a month or so of this TypePad account.
Here's where you can find it on Amazon.com.

But is it the full four hours or is it the three hour version? Dats what I wanna know....
I never did see the NG version and not sure I even plan on doing so, but I did enjoy this version....of course the actors on set weren't bad on these older eyes.
