Sci-Fi Seeks Critical Mass

That's the title of an excellent article in today's Newsday by TV critic Diane Werts.  In general, it's a report on the paradox that exists when science fiction programming on TV gets no respect as being award-worthy and yet some shows, like Battlestar Galactica, are clearly of exceptional dramatic quality.

In the world of journalism, I guess I was a two-fer for the article:  1) As a sci-fi TV writer (Dark Skies, The Crow, M.A.N.T.I.S., Lois & Clark, etc.) and 2) as the former chairman of the TV Academy about how hard it is for these quality shows like Battlestar to get recognized.  Here's my main quote from the article:

"I didn't expect to like it.  But I was amazed.  The characters and the human drama of that show surpassed anything I was watching.  I mean, the stakes -- I don't think I've watched a series where I felt so torn about mankind's chances to survive."

Outstanding Drama Series?

On my Emmy ballot this year, I voted for Battlestar Galactica as one of the top dramas in television this year.  The actual nominations are being announced next week.

The second season of Battlestar Galactica begins on July 15.  If you haven't already given this series a chance, you should start then.  It's not going to get an Emmy nomination but it doesn't mean you shouldn't be watching.
